Welcome to Senegal’s traditional fashion show. This year a premier artist/choreographer from Senegal is gathering the top models from the country together for the first time in the history of the country. These beautiful models are extremely talented, having the size, looks and discipline of world class fashion. In the past models from Senegal were not of consideration due in part to conservative religious thinking. As you may know Senegal is 90% Muslim. However, the laws of the country are integrated and quite liberal. Fashion shows have existed for many years know in Senegal as the freedom to pursue this career now exists. So the models have the freedom, but have lacked the opportunity. They are doing these shows are a very small budget. In most cases it is not possible for the models to make a living in this industry. Usually they must do some kind of media advertising/artist promotions, or video clips for musicians in order to succeed.Many very talented models do not reach their full potential, or fulfil their dreams. The model agencies they work through do not have the ability to get them international attention. This is what they desire, to be recognised throughout the world. The models I have selected are the most well known, sophisticated, and educated. The reason for proposing this idea is because I see other entities such as sport and music succeeding internationally, and I see the potential for these models to do the same. I see the opportunity to help them reach their dreams, which they do not have within the agencies they now work with. When these models become successful on the international scene it will be a benefit to my country and to all of Africa. They have a uniqueness that will surprise the world. A fresh perspective. It will also give younger models motivation as they see these ones succeeding. As we all know it inspires people when they see others having success. For example the singer Usu, a Senegal artist has inspired so many others to follow his lead and they too are fulfilling their dreams. Also the percussionist Disima Jabate has led the way for many others to take up that profession. Football player Anni Camadia with his national team has also done the same. Right now we have so very many models interested in this project. However we have selected a few of the best to present to the world. As the succeed, others will follow. The fashion shows will be integrated with live, traditional musical performances played by my music/ dance group Lions of Africa.
